Children (5-11)

Children often show us something is wrong before they can explain it. Big feelings, behavior changes, struggles at school, clinginess, irritability, sleep issues, and social difficulties can all signal that a child is overwhelmed or carrying something they cannot yet express. Many parents find it hard to know what is developmentally normal and what needs extra support.

At Selah Counseling & Wellness, we provide therapy for children ages 5–11 that integrates parents and guardians in an appropriate and client consensual manner through a Family Systems approach that is warm, developmentally appropriate, and grounded in relationship. We know children do best when the adults around them feel supported and our goal is to create stronger patterns of connection, regulation, and understanding at home and in everyday life.

Young children do not process emotions and experiences the way adults do, and play therapy utilizes play, children’s natural “language”, to help them express and process their feelings through toys and art instead of words. Our clinicians work to meet children where they are and help support them as they learn to manage their emotions to feel safer, calmer, and more confident.

How Therapy Can Help Children

For many children, change starts with feeling seen, heard and understood. Once a child feels safe, they are better able to receive support and respond differently to challenges.

Why Families Choose Therapy for Children

Many parents and caregivers wait to start a child in therapy, unsure if an issue is serious enough. But therapy shouldn’t wait until everyone feels like they’re on their last straw or it’s a crisis. Early intervention and being proactive can normalize therapy, prevent patterns from becoming entrenched, and give children and parents hope and support sooner.

Therapy can provide relief for families stuck in repetitive cycles of conflict, worry, or misunderstanding. When a child receives the right support, it often improves multiple areas of life. School can feel easier. Home can feel calmer. Relationships can feel more connected. Parents can feel validated and less alone.

Our Approach

Our approach is to provide relationally based, trauma-informed, neurodivergent-affirming mental health therapy for children and families. We draw from evidence-based methods and adapt them to each child’s unique needs. Depending on the child and the areas for growth, this may include play-based strategies, expressive arts, interactive games, psychoeducation and emotional regulation support.

We do not shame children for behaviors that may be signs of stress, fear, or unmet needs. Instead, we work to understand what drives the behavior and help the child and family respond more effectively. Sometimes that means helping a child manage worry. Sometimes it means strengthening routines, boundaries, or emotional language. Sometimes it means helping a family slow down and reconnect.

Parent involvement is key to this work. We offer insight into what may be happening beneath the surface and practical ways to support your child at home. That collaboration makes therapy more effective and sustainable.
