Levi Doyle-Barker, MA

I believe that life is about learning from experience. As human beings, we are constantly bombarded by those experiences making it difficult to figure out what to pay attention to in order to grow in the direction we want. As a therapist, I work with you to identify what matters to you from your past, present, and future. I enjoy helping people find answers to the big questions of life such as “who am I,” “what am I doing,” and “how do I heal?” I believe this approach gives people the ability to not only heal in the present moment, but to learn how to avoid future pain as well.

I use a combination of approaches to adapt and help the person I am working with, but focus primarily on a blend between cognitive-behavioral therapy and existential therapy. With this unique blend of approaches, I work with you to identify your big-picture goals such as healing, growth, or life goals with step-by-step skills and practices to reach those ideals. I also help you identify your values and beliefs. Through our work together, you will have more confidence, an enhanced sense of wellbeing, and a clearer picture of direction in your life.

What I'm Like as a Therapist

I provide a calm demeanor and environment to process difficult topics at your pace. At the same time, I will join with you in celebrating success and progress, as well as discussing steps for further improvement. I ensure that we have time to discuss your goals in every session. I focus on the current and past events that have contributed to the stress and difficulties in your life now, as well as your resiliency and strength in making it to today. Beyond your therapeutic goals, I work to get to know you as the full person you are so that you feel seen rather than examined. I welcome the full range of emotions in session so you can express yourself fully and encourage a relationship based on feedback so we can grow together.

Personal Interests

I believe in the importance of life-long learning and playing. I love stories in any form: movies, television, books, video games, and tabletop roleplaying games. I also enjoy spending time with friends and loved ones, attending festivals, and searching for good food.

“All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better. What if they are a little coarse and you may get your coat soiled or torn? What if you do fail, and get fairly rolled in the dirt once or twice? Up again, you shall never be so afraid of a tumble.”

AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Trauma Recovery

I take a trauma-informed approach with all of my clients. After exposure to one or many traumas regardless of severity, many people feel that they lose a part of themselves or control over themselves and their lives. If you feel this way, I can help you to make meaning out of the trauma as well as regain control of yourself and your life through cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness skills training, and existential therapy.

Mood and Anxiety Disorders

Most people struggle with depression or anxiety at some point in their life. Many people experience these difficulties for extended periods and need help learning how to cope with them. If this applies to you, I can help you to learn how your brain works, your motivations, and how to regulate these often overwhelming emotions. I do this with cognitive restructuring as well as behavioral change to not only help you feel better, but to feel a sense of mastery of yourself.

Life Transitions

Life is difficult and we often need help processing large changes. Whether it is adjusting to life away from home, losing your job, the end of a relationship, or any other major transition, these events can be overwhelming and are difficult to navigate on your own. I will work with you in regaining a sense of control of yourself and your transition so that you can adapt with it rather than be swept up by it.

Teens and Young Adults

The teenage and early adult years are difficult as you discover who you are within the world while also being thrust into increasing demands and responsibilities. It is common to feel alone and overwhelmed by all that is occuring during this time, along with rapid changes in your brain and mood. I will help you develop confidence in yourself as well as adapt to these changes and challenges.
